Why we run this course
The club launched a six week Women's Self Defence Class in February 2017 and we have held several sessions since then.
Techniques shown included being pushed, grabbed by the wrist, grabbed at the shoulder, attacked from behind and attacked against a wall. We will teach simple techniques to help you avoid these situations.
The course is run by BMAC blackbelts Emma Armstrong and Scott Burgess who designed the course to tackle five different situations and a variety of ways to defend yourself. We use some pads to practice striking - there's no better stress relief from a tough day - and practise moves on each other. We might occasionally bring in one of the bigger guys to really test out the skills! There are no karate suits, belts or boxing gloves involved. Just wear comfortable clothing.
On why we started this class, Emma commented "I learned self defence in my teens and returned to martial arts when I turned 30. I'm now a 1st Dan black belt and looking to pass on some of my skills. I'd always encourage women to join a martial arts club but I do understand how daunting it can be and not quite what you're looking for. That's why we've set up this self defence class; so women can learn to stay safe and have confidence when out. The most common reaction I hear about when women are attacked is that they "freeze" so the idea is to give you movements that we practice so that they become natural reactions should the worst ever happen."

Feedback
We have had over 40 people join us for the Women's Self Defence Class since we launched in February 2017 and we had an absolutely great time training with everyone.
At the end of the course we ask everyone to complete a feedback form and so far 100% of participants have given us two thumbs for enjoying the course (thanks everyone!). A regular comment is that the class is fun and relaxed so if you are nervous about joining, we can assure you of a friendly, welcoming and informal atmosphere.
We will advertise further blocks of the course but if you would like to register your interest, contact us here
